California Gold Rush - Pbk (New Cover)
Published in Paperback by Troll Assoc (01 February, 1998)

Picture Book for Study of Gold Rush
This book brings the California Gold Rush alive with wonderful pictures of the pioneer life in California. Historic names are woven into actual dialogue that makes one feel like they are a part of this history. "Boys, I believe I've found gold!" The pictures show the hard work, severe weather, entertainment and some prosperity. The pictures are black and white sketches and accompany an easy read text for fourth grade. I highly recommend this book.

California Government
Published in Paperback by Houghton Mifflin Company (January, 2002)
Author: John L. Korey
Average review score:

Excellent, Factual, and Detailed
This is a well-presented, comprehensive account of California government. I use the latest edition of the book in my American Politics class. This book has a wealth of details that are relevant in our politics and society, as well as easy to find and understand. Have you ever wanted to know exactly how many state-wide officials are elected in California and who they are? You will find the answer in this book. What is the structure of the judiciary and how has it been reformed since 1998, when the voters passed the initiative that streamlined the system? The answer is here. I like this book and recommend it to undergraduate students who study California politics and professors who teach the subject on the undegraduate level. By the way, I mean "students" in the most general sense. Even if you are not in college but want to really know more about California politics rather than read a bombastic, sensationalist account of current events, pick up this book.

To bear with unbearable sorrow
Though the work is forty years old, Storer and Tevis remains a valuable sourcebook for those wishing to understand the full nature of an extinction. It's all here: bear biology, relationships with Indians, relationships with Spaniards, stories of famous California Grizzlies, the ~real~ life and time of Grizzly Adams, and more. Whether you are a biologist, a historian, or just an armchair wildlife enthusiast, you will find California Grizzly a fascinating and necessary book.

A must for your car!
This handy book allows the traveler to look up the California State Historical marker number and read all about the markers one passes on the road. If you don't have time to stop, you can read about what you missed. If you want to plan a trip to an area and visit the historical landmarks in a certain region (like the Gold Country), this book is an excellent resource.

California Hot Rodder
Published in Paperback by Graffiti Publications (15 September, 2000)
Author: Jay Carnine
Average review score:

A must for all gearheads!
California Hot Rodder is a fantastic representation of what hot rodding is all about, long before the explotation and commercialization of America's most unique hobby. Jay grew up square in the middle of an era that allot of younger people can only imagine and wish they were a part of. He relates exciting and funny stories of racing, building cars with friends, and enjoying those cars with his family, while providing a excellent timeline of how the styles and trends of hot rods progressed over the years, interspersed with great technical information.

This book gives you the feel of sitting with your buddies in your garage gathered around your hot rod, late on a Saturday night, having a couple of beers, telling stories and benchracing.

Definatly buy it today!!!

The California Idea and American Higher Education: 1850 To the 1960 Master Plan
Published in Hardcover by Stanford Univ Pr (July, 2000)
Author: John Aubrey Douglass
Average review score:

A MUCH NEDED LOOK AT HOW CALIFORNIA DID IT
The California Idea fills a big need in the scholarship on higher education: a broad and comparative analysis on how an important state has approached the issues of broadening higher education access. This book is well written, good for both scholars, policymakers, and those generally interested in a public higher education system that has benefited so many Californians.

California in the New Millennium: The Changing Social and Political Landscape
Published in Paperback by University of California Press (April, 2002)
Author: Mark Baldassare
Average review score:

Great for understanding the future of California
This is a very well written book, with a survey of over 10,000 people that he has intereviewed snice 1998, so it is timely and appears very accurate.

He goes on to talk much about the changing landscape in CA in such areas as politics; how minorities are changing the face of CA and that in the future the Hispanic nationality will be the major group in CA.

He also talks specifically about the state as a whole and the various ways that people have tried to divide up CA. I have been born and raised in the Northern part of this state and agree 100% with what he states, that the state could be divided right around the San Luis Obisop/Fresno County line with a North California and a South California because the two areas are so different.

California in the Year 2000: A Look into the Future of the Golden State As It Approaches the Millennium
Published in Hardcover by Pacific Book Pub (October, 1992)
Author: Charles F. Adams
Average review score:

The Golden State isn't so golden....
I was living in Monterey, California when I first picked up this book. Monterey is one of the more beautiful and 'unaffected' areas of California, but no part of this state is fully immune to the problems listed in this book. Among them: crime, high taxes, over-population, illegal aliens, earthquakes, and the ever-pressing problem of the lack of water. While California is still a wonderful place to visit, I was already thinking that I no longer wanted to live there. The book was greatly influential in my final decision to move - back East.

A great reference for in-line skaters in California!!!
This book is a must-have for in-line skaters. I don't skate but my son does, and this book has shown me lots of new places to take him and his friends. In fact, after reading this book, I'm thinking about learning to skate myself!
